CHOREOGRAPHY

Hi!
I’m Soph Cardinal (they/them)—a non-binary dancer, choreographer, educator, and researcher committed to reshaping the dance world through inclusive, identity-centered artistry. My work lives at the intersection of movement, film, pedagogy, and creative process, centering the body as a site of self. Whether I’m in the studio, on set, or in the classroom, I’m passionate about curating spaces where movement becomes a path toward self-discovery, connection, and collective liberation.
My Story
I grew up dancing as a closeted queer and trans dancer in rural Arizona, where early training in Hip Hop, contemporary jazz, ballet, improvisation, and choreography laid the foundation for a lifelong love of movement and storytelling. I earned my BFA in Dance, Summa Cum Laude, from Colorado State University in 2021, where I presented numerous original choreographic works, performed in over 25 faculty and guest pieces, and showcased Screendance works at festivals such as Earl Mosley's Diversity of Dance Dance is Activism Film Festival. After graduating, I relocated to Los Angeles, where I worked professionally, collaborating with artists such as Derek Hough and Jessica Starr across contemporary and hip-hop genres in the commercial dance field. During that time, I continued teaching throughout California, Arizona, and Colorado, and became a Regionally and Nationally awarded choreographer for competition works presented through NYCDA, Groove, NRG, and Fluid Dance Competitions.
In 2024, I relocated to Salt Lake City to pursue an MFA in Modern Dance with a Screendance Certificate at the University of Utah. Here, I’ve presented film and live performance work with 801 Salon, the Creative Process to Production Graduate Group, the Screendance Graduate Group, and, most recently, my MFA Thesis, where we have been | will be through the University of Utah. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I teach and assist a range of courses, including Contemporary and Jazz Technique, Composition, Dance Histories, and History of Hip Hop. My research, centered on the role of the body in understanding the self, has been presented at UDEO’s Fall Teacher Conference and the School of Dance’s Half A Century in Motion: Honoring Chicanx Dance, Art, and Activism.
Outside of the university, I am currently directing the Utah Dance Film Festival’s international MOVE: A 48 Hour Film Competition, as well as leading the FAF Grant-Funded Screendance Graduate Group, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation at the university, regional, and international levels. I continue my work with younger generations of students through teaching at competition studios such as The Winner School in Holladay, Utah, and Prima Dance Arizona. This year, I am also honored to serve the SLC local professional community as a faculty member for Season 8 of loveDANCEmore's Dance Class For Humans series.
At the heart of my work is a deep curiosity about the role of the body in understanding the self. My students, collaborators, and fellow scholars continually inspire me to create spaces where movement becomes a path toward identity, connection, and transformation.
I'm available for Master Classes, Choreographic Endevours, Teaching Workshops, Cinematography/Editing Services, and Mentorship at the Undergraduate, Graduate, Competition, and Professional levels, and would love to work with YOU!
